S.1720 was introduced by Sens. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Rob Portman (R-OH). The measure is the Senate companion to H.R. 3076. The core provisions of the legislation would repeal the requirement that the U.S. Postal Service prefund its retiree health benefits and would better integrate Medicare with the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program for future retirees. The Postal Service estimates that these changes would save the agency approximately $44 billion over the next decade. Among H.R. 3076's other provisions, is a section that seeks to enhance the transparency of postal performance and another to ensure the maintenace of 6-day delivery for all postal products.
