It is with deep sadness that NAPS reports the passing of House Oversight and Reform Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD). Rep. Cummings died at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to "complications concerning longstanding health challenges," according to a statement released by his office.
Throughout his 12-term tenure, Rep. Cummings had proven himself as a steadfast ally and champion of active and retired postal and federal employees. NAPS worked closely with the congressman and staff to move meaningful postal legislation and to protect the interests of all EAS level postal employees. Rep. Cummings was respected by both Democrats and Republican members of the House and the Senate.
NAPS Executive Vice President commented on how comfortable Rep. Cummings made you feel in his presence. "I remember the first function I attended with Mr. Cummings and how he took time to sit with me and discuss NAPS issues and his commitment to supporting the USPS," VP Butts remarked. Rep. Cummings was a true advocate for justice for "all". First and foremost, he fought for his Baltimore constituents.
NAPS extends its sympathies to Rep. Cummings' wife, Maya, and his children, as well as the members of his dedicated staff.
